Vitamin C

So when you think of vitamin C most people think of oranges and other citrus fruits. But did you know that blackcurrants and red peppers are real power houses when it comes to vitamin C? Red bell peppers are one of the richest sources and blackcurrants have 4 times the vitamin C as oranges! Blackcurrant season is in August so a great idea is to pick them at a local farm in the summer and then store them ready for the winter season. They last for 3-6 months in the freezer.

Other great sources of vitamin C are broccoli, kiwi fruit, cabbage and green leafy vegetables. Eating whole foods rather than consuming them as juices means that fibre is being consumed at the same time. This slows down the release of the vitamin C and means our body can utilise it more effectively.

Vitamin C is especially prominent right now with the current Coronavirus pandemic and at this time of year with colds and flu. Vitamin C is vital in keeping our immune system healthy and functioning properly. When we have a virus our bodies demand for vitamin C increases. By increasing our levels beforehand this helps our body become well equipped to deal with any attacks.
